Thinking globally by acting locally

MEDIA RELEASE

Llanelli Rural Council has pledged its support in regard to a national declaration of an Environment and Climate Emergency.  The council has elected to set up a task and finish group to focus on the issue.  The council like many other local councils in the UK is determined to play its part by examining its policy decisions, actions and activities in the community and what can be done locally to tackle carbon emissions to help combat global warming.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Tegwen Devichand commented that “there is a collective responsibility to safeguard our natural environment.  The council is already obliged to observe and act in accordance with the sustainable development principle as defined under the Well-Being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015.  The Act sets out seven well-being goals which all public bodies in Wales are expected to follow.  One of the goals ‘A resilient Wales’ specifically addresses the need to maintain and enhance a biodiverse natural environment with healthy functioning ecosystems that support social, economic and ecological resilience and the capacity to adapt to important issues such as climate change.  Over the next six months the council’s task and finish group will carry out a root and branch review of its activities to establish what measures it can take locally in support of the national declaration.”
