JOINT PUBLIC STATEMENT FROM DYFED POWYS POLICE & LLANELLI RURAL COUNCIL CONCERNING FIRE OUTSIDE CANOLFAN LLWYNHENDY

The Council strongly condemns the fire that was alleged to have been deliberately started outside its premises on the evening of Friday 8 May 2026 at Canolfan Llwynhendy, Heol Elfed. Thankfully, no one was injured, but the incident has caused concern within the local community and unnecessary damage to a valued public facility. The Council would like to sincerely thank the individuals who intervened quickly to move a burning bin away from the building, helping to prevent the fire from spreading further. Thanks, are also extended to the fire service for their swift response and professional actions in bringing the incident under control safely.

A spokesperson for Dyfed Powys Police said “Dyfed-Powys Police received a report of a fire occurring at Canolfan Llwynhendy at around 10:15pm on Friday, May 08. The suspect illegally set alight a bin, placing it against the exterior of the Canolfan building near a gas pipe. The building was empty at the time this incident took place. One female, aged 13 has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life on Saturday, May 09. The suspect was remanded into custody and released under conditional bail. Officers want to thank those upstanding members of the public who assisted in their investigation to identify the individual involved.”

Leader of Llanelli Rural Council, Cllr. Rob Evans said: “Our facilities belong to the whole community, and we ask everyone to remain vigilant and help us protect these important community assets. We are extremely grateful to the members of the public who acted quickly to move the burning bin away from the building, as well as to the fire service for their rapid response and professionalism. Their actions helped prevent what could have been a far more serious incident. This serves as a reminder that protecting community facilities is a shared responsibility, and we encourage anyone with information to assist the police with their enquiries.”
